Maelstrom is an area-of-effect spell so care should  be used when casting it.  When in a room with a mob that could easily slay you it is not wise to cast maelstrom to kill a [[beastly_fido|beastly fido]].  What is interesting about this spell is that it has no saving throw so maelstrom is invaluable when leveling up by slaying multiple mobs at once.
